DIRECTED & DEVISED WITH YOUTH CO-written WITH WES CARRASQUILLO
WITH SUPPORT FROM broadway choreographer maria TORRES
@ THE MIRACLE CENTER (TMC) SUMMER 2016
ABOUT THE PLAY
The Barrio Project interprets the real life of Robert Renteria: from a childhood of poverty and abuse in one of the poorest areas of East Los Angeles, to his emergence as a successful adult. Audiences meet his loving and supportive mother and grandfather; his girlfriend and friends-turned-foes; an abusive stepfather; and in a ghost life, his alcoholic father that abandoned the family. Despite and because of this adversity, Robert perseveres.
Along with this story, TMC youth express their own true struggles and barriers in their own communities, and speak out on what it means to be a teen in Chicago, with raps, poems, movement, and even song.
